Plans for 2006
Program activities:
- Support at least 2 new partners working in stone quarrying/construction and agriculture-based migrations. Linking up with AIF’s livelihoods work.
- Assist current partners to:
- Establish work at sending & receiving ends with multiple strategies
- Strengthen quality issues in the work site schools & hostels
- Strengthen local schools in villages
- Find newer ways of community involvement/empowerment.
- Assist partners to scale up
- Help partners engage with local & state government. Facilitate support from the central government
- Help partners link with local NGOs to work on migration. Support them with technical capacities. If NGOs not available, explore the possibility of partners setting up regional centers to support this work. These centers can eventually become independent. (Being explored in Maharashtra)
- In Maharashtra, a study of sugar migrations into Gujarat in the North, and Karnataka in the South, to be undertaken. Alliance being explored with local NGOs in both areas.
Research and Advocacy
- Support newer partners to undertake basic documentation, and older ones to study specific emerging issues.
- Develop a research plan, and a mechanism to operationalize it. This would involve in the coming quarter:
- Identifying a person to coordinate
- Setting up a research advisory group to guide the work
- Framing the research questions and research design
- Identifying migration sectors & geographies to be studied
- Setting up a survey team & commencing the work
(Draft research plan being prepared)
- Organize a workshop on migration for an academic, bureaucratic and development agency audience.
