Children of Seasonal Migrants
The Larger Agenda
In the coming years, AIF will continue with its efforts to get seasonal distress migration “on the radar screen” of the government, development agencies, media, and general public, so that the issues of this extremely disadvantaged group can be better addressed.
Program objectives
- Refining comprehensive coverage models of schooling for migrant children in different geographies and sectors, and scaling up.
- Integration with rights, entitlements, and alternative livelihoods issues.
- Pursuing with central, state and local levels of government to make migrant children a focus of SSA
- A comprehensive plan for research & advocacy
Program Activities
- Support programs on the ground
- To cover migration in newer sectors
- To strengthen the model
- work at sending & receiving ends
- multiple options to cover maximum children
- strengthening government schools
- improve quality (pedagogy, program management)
- To expand coverage in existing programs
- to reach universal coverage at existing sites (so far it is 40-60% with Janarth)
- reach newer sites
- focus on better coverage of 11-14 year age groups
- To extend coverage of 0-3 year and 14-18 year age groups
- To improve community involvement/empowerment
- To integrate with rights, entitlements & livelihoods issues, esp. EGA
- Research & Advocacy
- To codify the program processes and create manuals, regionwise
- Improve DBMS and program monitoring mechanism
- To continue with process documentation
- To study migration in the larger belt around project areas
- To identify other interested NGOs in the region, and help them build capacities to work on migration
- To improve engagement with block and district levels of government
- To create strategies for engaging with employers
- To link with other agencies for collaboration on a number of issues (e.g. quality, technical innovation, etc.)
