Access To Education - Urban Education

Bodh Shiksha Samiti, Rajasthan:

$ 187,500 (2007)

Bodh is an organization located in Jaipur, with extensive experience in working with deprived urban children.  AIF supports Bodh in their efforts to universalize elementary education in the urban slums of the city, with three key elements - community mobilization, improved quality of learning/child-centered pedagogy, and policy advocacy.  This project is being formulated in close coordination with the government.  With AIF support, over 7,000 children of Jaipur’s slums are receiving education.

Nidan, Bihar:

$ 129,342 (2007)

Nidan has been an AIF livelihoods partner since 2004 in a three year program that worked towards increasing the livelihood opportunities of rag pickers and sweepers in two wards of Patna. Nidan’s education initiative recognizes the integral link between livelihoods and education.

The most recent census (2001) indicates a dismal scenario of education in Bihar.  The state tops the list in illiteracy with a rate of 47.4%.  The male literacy rate (60.32%) is nearly double the female rate (33.57%).  Because of the dismal state of public schools, communities often view rag picking and other such pursuits as a better option for their children.  Older girls are further prevented from attending schools because they often must take care of their younger siblings.

NIDAN has established Bridge Schools for children ages 3 to 14 years while working closely with the community to generate education-related support.  Bodh Shiksha Samiti – a resource NGO in Jaipur and an AIF partner - is providing technical support to Nidan to improve education quality by developing academic support groups within Nidan, conducting continuous training programs, work shops and onsite and off site support.
